Welcome! I’m D’Orsay, the flower farmer, gluten free baker, Master Gardener, Mosquito Biologist and homesteader behind the Instagram account @the.coveted.corner, where I share about growing flowers, vegetables, homesteading, gluten free baking and how to see the world through a more ecologically sound lens.
After earning my Masters in Biology with a focus in infectious disease I started my career working as a mosquito biologist and ecologist. In understanding the relationships between insects and us I have used this experience to create a more biodiverse approach to gardening. In accounting for the natural world, I have become more successful with growing flowers and vegetables. I have always believed that living with nature, as opposed to fighting against it, will yield a greater balance in the garden and in life.
Flowers were always part of my vegetable gardens because of how beneficial they are to pollination and their contribution to a more abundant harvest. Flowers also became part of my gardening life when I discovered that by increasing the biodiversity of my garden by adding flowers it actually resulted in the mitigation of pests. Researching mosquitoes for over a decade gave me insight into both sides of insects as pests and pollinators. More biodiversity, more balance, more flowers. Simple.
On any given day you will find me working in the garden, designing a bouquet or researching my next project.
I live in the Pocono Mountains with my husband Cory and our three cats Mowgli, Izzy and Pepper.
